TROY, NY (Nov. 22, 2012) — On a day set aside for Capital Region families to come together and give thanks, a record setting 8,290 participants descended upon the home of iconic Uncle Sam this morning for the 65th annual Troy Turkey Trot, America’s 12th oldest road race.

Following a new schedule that ensured that runners had plenty of time to get home to prepare for Thanksgiving Day celebrations with their loved ones, the event got underway at 8 a.m. with the 10K, which also doubled as USATF Adirondack’s 10K Championship.

During the 6.2-mile run, which followed an out-and-back course along River Street and attracted a record-setting 10K field of 1,123 competitive runners from Plattsburgh to the Hudson Valley, Kevin Treadway (24, Albany, NY) captured the prestigious crown in 31:23 and the accompanying $250 first place prize. First across the line in the female division was Kristina Gracey (29, Guilderland, NY), who also earned a $250 payday with a time of 37:04.

At the 10K’s conclusion, a record-setting field of 5,747 then gathered on Fourth and Fulton Streets to participate in the day’s main attraction, the 5K. The runners, many of whom were bedecked in colorful costumes ranging from Santa Claus to Spiderman, were in a celebratory mood as they hit their stride along River Street, which was lined with thousands of cheering spectators.

The first male to hit the 5k finish tape at Monument Square was Macky Lloyd, 22, of Voorheesville, NY, who tied the course record of 15:05 set by Zachary Predmore in 2008. Female bragging rights went to Erin Gillingham, 21, of New York City who crossed the tape in 17:59.

In an effort to help bring families even closer together, organizers included eight 5K family divisions. Winners in these categories included: mother/daughter (Kelly and Katie Pasko); mother/son (Christine and Jared Capuano); father/daughter (Kevin Rose and Eileen OConnor); father/son (Joshua and Michael Farrell); sister/sister (Carolyn and Samantha Pellegrini); brother/brother (Jacob and Jordan Johnson); brother/sister (Robert and Carolyn Herkenham); and, husband/wife (Shaun and Trish Horan).

Earlier that morning, 726 kids took part in the Grade School Mile, a fun, non-timed participatory event for those in the 8th grade and below. Meanwhile, 571 opted to burn off their pre-meal calories at a slower pace by tackling the Turkey Walk, a one-mile fitness walk that followed the same course as the Grade School Mile and finished on River Street at Monument Square.

As usual, Troy Turkey Trot participants gave generously to charities that help improve the quality of life for thousands of Capital Region residents. More than $12,000 was raised for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, the Troy Boys & Girls Club and the Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club. Hundreds of participants and spectators also brought a non-perishable food item to the Troy Atrium to give to local food pantries.

“Family time is the best gift you can get,” said Event Director George Regan, who returned to direct operations after a two-year hiatus. “We’re thrilled that so many families signed up today, helping us to shatter the Trot’s 64-year participation record. Today’s turnout will undoubtedly improve upon our current ranking as the 11th largest Turkey Trot in the nation.”

“What makes the Troy Turkey Trot so unique is that it offers something for everyone,” added Troy Mayor Lou Rosamilia, who soaked up Troy’s historic architecture as a participant in the Turkey Walk. “It really is a community event in its truest form.”

Event sponsors include Hannaford Supermarkets; SportsSignup; Pioneer Bank; Wm. J.Fagan & Sons, Inc.; Maccio Physical Therapy; CDPHP; Bryce Real Estate; The Record; and FOX23 News; B95.5 fm; and, FLY 92.3 fm.

Online Effort Designed to Help Runners Get in Best Shape Possible for 11/22 Event; Series of Nutrition, Injury Prevention Seminars Also on Tap

TROY, NY (October 18, 2012) — If you’ve dreamed of competing in a road race but wondered how best to get in shape, consider participating in a free virtual training program culminating with the Troy Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 22. With just five weeks left to go there is still time to get in shape and participate on Thanksgiving morning, though it is recommended that you have some training base already, or can at least jog non-stop for eight minutes.

Each week you’ll be emailed timely training and body care tips from running and nutrition experts to prepare you for the event’s 5K. To register, please visit: http://www.troyturkeytrot.com/training/virtual/

“This training program offers runners a great way to get into shape for any 5K road race,” said Troy Turkey Trot Event Director George Regan, adding that already more than 140 people have registered for the program, which is based around the successful Freihofer’s Run for Women Training Challenge. “Participants will have the added motivation of having workouts delivered to their inbox each morning.”

As part of the effort, FOX23 News’ weekend anchor Meagan Farley will spearhead a training group for those interested in running together in preparation for the Troy Turkey Trot. Participants will experience the camaraderie, support and motivation that come with focusing on a goal with others, as well as receive “VIP treatment” race day with exclusive access to the FOX23 tent at the start and finish line, along with post-race refreshments. To join Meagan’s Team or to network with her and other team members, visit http://www.troyturkeytrot.com/training/meagans-team/

Since proper eating habits and realistic workout goals can help runners arrive prepared and confident on race day, Troy Turkey Trot organizers have also lined up free presentations designed to get participants ready to hit the asphalt.

On Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Troy YMCA, chiropractor Dr. Tim Maggs will provide a hands- on running injury prevention program to help runners reach their goals injury free. Dr. Maggs will discuss structural and muscular injuries and preventive and corrective measures to address these issues. He will also talk about custom orthotics, how to develop a muscle management program and nutritional supplements.

Then, on Nov. 13 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at The Record’s Community Media Lab, Dr. Maggs, family nurse practitioner Christine Cooley and Patrick Lynskey, a certified coach and trainer, will teach runners how to reach their goals injury free, adopt proper eating habits, and maintain a good exercise regimen.

Nation’s 12th Oldest Road Race to Feature New Courses, Revised Event Schedule, Improved Commemorative T-Shirts and Festive Family Activities;

Regional Food Bank Named Designated Charity

TROY, NY (September 27, 2012) — Seven thousand participants from three dozen states are expected to descend upon the home of iconic Uncle Sam this Thanksgiving (Nov. 22) for the 65th annual Troy Turkey Trot, one of the oldest and largest road races in New York state.

The event, the 64th oldest road race in the world, is “stuffed” with holiday activities and features a 10K, Grade School Mile, Turkey Walk and 5K.

“The Troy Turkey Trot has been bringing families together to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday since 1916,” said Event Director George Regan, who returns to direct operations after a two-year hiatus. “Since the day revolves around families and fitness, we’ve decided to offer a variety of options for our participants, including mother/daughter, father/daughter and sister/sister teams, just to name a few. It should be tremendous fun!”

A slate of changes, such as a return to the traditional Turkey Trot course using an “out and back” format along River Street, will help make this year’s edition truly memorable. Other modifications include: upgraded gender-specific, moisture-wicking t-shirts for the first 6,200 participants who register for either the 5K or 10K; custom-made commemorative finishers’ medals to all open, age group and team winners; finishers’ medals for Grade School Milers; and, a commemorative finishers’ pin for all Turkey Walk participants.

The 10K event, which features two loops of the flat 5K course and doubles as the United States Track & Field Adirondack Association’s 10K championship, will kick things off at 8 a.m. Families are invited to show their support and cheer on the runners. Race officials will close the 10K course after 90 minutes. Those unable to complete the course in the allotted time period are asked to enter the shorter 5K distance.

Following the 10K will be the Grade School Mile, which is open to children up to eighth grade and is non- timed and the Turkey Walk, a one-mile fitness walk for those who prefer to burn off their pre-meal calories at a slower pace. Both events get underway at 9:20 a.m. There is no fee for either the Grade School Mile or the Turkey Walk, but all participants must register and will be assigned a bib number. Day-of-event registration will be held in the Troy Atrium for both the Turkey Walk and Grade School Mile.

Runners will then toe the line for the 5K, the most popular event of the day drawing up to 5,400 participants, at 9:45 a.m.

Registration for all events opens Sept. 27th at TroyTurkeyTrot.com. For both the 5K and 10K, the registration fee is $20 through 10/21, after which the fee increases to $25 through 11/19. From 11/20- 11/21, the last chance fee is $30. There is no day-of-event registration for either the 5K or 10K.

While registering online, all participants are invited to make a donation to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, this year’s “regional” charity. Organizers have also selected the Troy Boys & Girls Club and the Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club as the Trot’s “local” charities. All spectators and participants are invited to bring a non-perishable food item to the Troy Atrium to give to local food pantries.

“We are thrilled to host the 65th annual Troy Turkey Trot and proud to showcase some of Troy’s most historic neighborhoods,” added Mayor Lou Rosamilia, noting that the race is the biggest event Troy holds all year. “This is a fantastic way to get the entire community involved in celebrating fitness, family and tradition. There really is something here for everyone.”

As in previous years, post-race refreshments and entertainment will be offered in the finish line area on Third Street. Complete race results will be featured after the event in The Record newspaper and online at troyturkeytrot.com.

Ample, free event parking is available at a number of Front and River Street parking lots. A comprehensive map of Troy parking lots can be found at: http://troyny.gov/Departments/Parking.aspx

For more information or to register, visit www.TroyTurkeyTrot.com. Additional information is also available by calling (518) 273-5552.
